Experience told him that he needed a way of slowing the horseless carriage, to brake its speed. That experience gives us hydraulic brake systems, steel and ceramic discs, and varying forms of brake pads.
But like anything that involves friction, there’s wear and tear to consider. For most people, brakes are those things that tend to be forgotten about until the stop doesn’t happen. The lament will be “But I only changed them a few years ago, don’t they last longer?”
Brake pads in cars are user dependent. That covers distance driven and how hard a driver you are. When it comes to BMW and brakes, there are a few things to consider. If you own a BMW that’s driven with one person aboard and it’s not a sports oriented model, or do the school run and a bit of shopping, there’s a fair chance the pads will last longer than, say, an M3 coupe used for both road and track day duty.
A fair estimate of how long a brake pad should last for the average driver is around three years, on the presumption that an average driver covers around 20,000 kilometres per year. With the average brake pad life around 60,000 kilometres, there’s that three year average dovetailing nicely.
On top of the pad usage is the type of brake fluid and the quality of it too. Dirty fluid or low fluid means excess pressure for the pads to work efficiently.
